FAQ

The questions buyers askbefore they buy.

Skill level, formats, refunds, free updates, and accessibility — everything most buyers want to know before they commit. Read this page before you check out; we’ll cite the receipt as the source of truth if anything here ever disagrees with what you actually get.

Skill & experience

Skill & experience

I have zero survival experience. Is this guide still for me?

Yes — and honestly, it’s written for you first. Every project opens with a “minimum kit” list, ranks its difficulty upfront, and includes the mistakes most beginners make so you don’t repeat them. If you’ve never lit a fire without a barbecue brick, start with the Water and Shelter categories; the builds escalate from there.

I’ve been bushcrafting for years. Will this still teach me anything?

It will, but maybe not where you expect. The guide leans into engineering: solar sizing, thermal mass calculations, water-distillation thermodynamics, greywater filtration ratings. Most experienced readers tell us the section-by-section material-quantity tables are the most valuable part — they’re what you actually need when the lumberyard is closed.

Is this safe for a household with kids at home?

Every fire, forge, and chemical-handling project calls out a kid-safe version, an adult-monitored version, and a teach-with version. Age ranges are in the margin where it matters. There’s also a “when to wait for an adult” callout for builds that aren’t appropriate until the kids are ready for household tools.

How much time does each project take?

Listed in the header of every project — ranges from “15 minutes, one fire” to “two weekends for a wood-fired evaporator.” We mark weekend builds with a blue flag and multi-week builds (most shelter and solar projects) with a red flag so you can triage your weekly time realistically.

Property & climate

Property & climate

What size property do I need?

Roughly 90% of the projects work on a quarter-acre suburban lot. The remaining 10% — the multi-acre agricultural and large-livestock builds — note “rural only” upfront and offer a townhouse or apartment analogue (vertical gardens, container livestock, rooftop solar, balcony rainwater) where one exists.

We also flag builds that don’t need any land at all: balcony-scale composting, indoor sprouts, rain capture off a balcony railing.

I’m in the desert / tropics / mountain West. Will anything apply?

The first three pages of every category note the climate envelope the builds are designed for and where they break down. The Shelter section has dedicated hot-climate, cold-climate, and humid-coast variants. The Water section includes a full arid-region distillation chapter and a coastal collection chapter. We don’t pretend one guide covers Antarctica and Phoenix equally, but the overlap is large enough that most buyers skip the irrelevant sections.

I rent. Can I install any of these?

Each project is tagged with a permanence score: reversible (clamp, no holes), semi-permanent (drilled, easily patched), or permanent (concrete pour, foundation work). Renters only need the reversible and semi-permanent builds — they’re about 70% of the guide, including every water, every food-sprout, every solar-microwave, and nearly all of the medical and communication chapters.

Will my HOA or local code fight me on any of this?

The guide flags 12 specific builds where code enforcement is realistic (rain barrels, solar panels, compost bins, outdoor wood-fired boilers, rainwater capture volume) and walks through a quick, friendly language you can use with code officers. It’s not legal advice, and we say so — but the patterns work in most US counties we’ve heard from.

Formats & files

Formats & files

What formats do I get?

The PDF is a single 304-page file, designed for A4 and 6″ reader screens. It’s a real PDF (not a fixed-layout scan): every page reflows if you bump up the font size, the bookmarks present in your reader of choice, and every figure keeps its caption when zoomed.

Can I print the PDF?

Yes — the page imposition has been adjusted so a duplex Letter or A4 reads cleanly without figure clipping. The print edition ships the same hardcopy with a heavier cover and a sewn binding, so for most buyers it’s not worth printing yourself unless you only need a chapter or two. Head to any office-supply store’s print-on-demand counter and quote the page count (304) for a price comparison.

What reader do I need?

Any PDF reader will open it — Preview on macOS, the built-in reader on iOS and Android, Adobe Acrobat, browser PDF viewer, Calibre. We test on Preview, the Kindle Scribe’s Send-to-Kindle flow, and reMarkable’s PDF reader. The bookmarks, hyperlinks, and in-document cross-references work in every reader we’ve tested.

Does it work offline / without an internet connection?

Yes. The PDF is fully self-contained — no companion app, no live URL fetches, no DRM. Once you’ve downloaded it, the file works on a plane, in a basement, on a phone with no signal, indefinitely. That’s the point.

Is there any DRM / copy protection that breaks my workflow?

None on the digital edition. Print the chapter you need, mark it up by hand, extract the diagrams for a class — that’s all encouraged. The only thing we don’t permit is re-publishing the whole guide under your own name; the license in the front matter spells that out in one page.

Buying & updates

Buying & updates

Is my payment information safe here?

You don’t share card details with SurvivalForge Press — the checkout is hosted by Stripe under their PCI-DSS Level 1 setup, the highest tier in the industry. We see only a Stripe receipt ID after payment, never the card. Apple Pay and Google Pay skip the card-entry form entirely where your browser offers them.

Can I get a refund if it’s not for me?

Yes — 60 days from purchase, no questions asked. Reply to your receipt email and we process the refund the same business day. For the print edition we coordinate return shipping first; for the digital edition the access keys revoke automatically, nothing to return.

How do I get free updates as you release them?

Every new chapter and every revised build notes sheet is added to a single shared /account/updates feed. Sign in with the email you used at checkout and the file shows up there automatically. New releases also email you a quiet heads-up; if you’d rather not, you can turn that off in the /account page.

If you go out of business, do I lose the file?

No — the file you receive on day one is complete and offline-capable. Future updates are a freebie, not a lock-in: everything new is opt-in, and the file you have today stays valid forever. There’s no online check, no license server, no monthly renewal to keep the latest copy working.

Do you offer bulk or group discounts?

Yes — a classroom pack (10 digital licenses, $79) and a community pack (50 digital licenses, $299). Both come with a printable reference card set. For larger orders, send us a note and we’ll arrange a quote — usually within a day.

Still on the fence?

Drop us a line.

We answer every presale message personally — usually within a day, and often faster.
